Jordan's Page

Here's a brief look at Jordan Barnes
Picture
Aloha, My name is  Jordan P. Barnes, I live in Kailua on the island of O`ahu and write in the "Quit-Lit"/Memoir/Autofiction niche(s). As an addict in recovery (10 years clean on August 29th, 2021) I am motivated to tell stories that destigmatize substance use disorder and inspire hope where possible. I fell in love with storytelling when I worked up the courage to tell my own story (One Hit Away: A Memoir of Recovery) and the response inspired me to pursue writing full-time.

I am a grateful alcoholic & addict in recovery and Sand Island Treatment Center is my home  group. When not sharing my experience, strength and hope through writing or talking story, I enjoys bodysurfing and gardening. Residing in beautiful Kailua, Hawaiʻi with my lovely wife Chelsea and son Logan, I have been sober from all mind-and-mood-altering substances since August 29th, 2011.

I am a proud new member of the Hawaii  Writers’ Guild and my debut book, One  Hit Away: A Memoir of Recovery won 2020s “Best Book of the Year” award from www.IndiesToday.com,  was a B.R.A.G. Medallion Honoree as well as a finalist in the 15th  Annual National Indie Excellence Awards.

Chapter One, “Carried Away”

I am currently revising my sophomore book, BRIDGETOWN: A Harm Reduction Novel. Though I am prepared to self-publish again, I am considering querying this title.

Book Description: As a Harm Reductionist who manages a syringe exchange program in the heart of Portland, OREGON,  Oaklynn Hammond is best known as a pillar of hope and compassion. Along with her dedicated team, she fights for the rights and well-being of people who use drugs, ever committed to minimizing the harmful effects resulting from illicit drug use.

However, clean supplies and drug checking can only take one so far when a torrent of fentanyl-laced  heroin rips through the city. Refusing to stand on the sidelines, Oaklynn and her team rush to put life-saving supplies into the hands of those who need it most. But when overdose prevention falls short, they all risk being swept away by the unrelenting overdose  crisis.Scrambling to help others stay afloat during a public health crisis compounded by stigma,  blame and fear, Oaklynn realizes that the only way to shine a light on the underworld is to bring it to the surface. In doing so, she opens the floodgates and discovers that meeting people where they’re at also means no one gets left behind.

Here are some of the notable reviews my work has received:

“One  Hit Away is a gripping, startling account into addiction, compassion and ultimate salvation. It is powerful because of its honesty. Raw without being sensationalistic, this harrowing account of Jordan’s journey provides insight and compassion into the struggle  of addiction. It is an important, engrossing book that is hard to put down."  Annie  Grace, Author THIS NAKED MIND: Control Alcohol, Find Freedom, Discover Happiness & Change Your Life.
#############################

“Having suffered through too many of Portland’s sunrises in recent years, the art on the horizon has either lost its beauty or I’m too jaded to see in color anymore.” This is just one beautiful example of the eloquent and evocative prose that graces the pages of One Hit Away: A Memoir of Recovery.

#############################

Jordan Barnes begins this dramatic memoir at a devastatingly low point in his life; he wakes up to discover that his companion has not survived the night. With a difficult decision to make, Jordan makes one of a series of destructive decisions that fuels his relentless heroin addiction. His story proves to be an anguished journey t hrough the helplessness and hopelessness of addiction to a distant, almost unimaginable place where he finally finds a measure of peace.
#############################

Hard-hitting and honest, Jordan Barnes gives readers a graphic glimpse into the belly of the beast. Eye-opening in the most heartrending way, Jordan is the consummate storyteller, taking readers through his thought-processes, his daily physical and emotional struggles, impossible choices, and the unexpected complexities unique to a life of addiction. The descriptions are richly vivid and incredibly poignant. Even just the simple act of an embrace from his concerned parents made me feel so much.
#############################

One Hit Away: A Memoir of Recovery is a brilliant example of powerful literature that will take willing readers on a walk I in a different pair of shoes. If you have a loved one wrestling with addiction, have a lingering addiction yourself, or if you simply want to become a more empathetic and enlightened human,  please read this gripping true story by Jordan P. Barnes. This is a difficult yet redeeming story that will stay with you, one you’ll be talking about for years to come.IndiesToday.com
#############################

“Jordan P. Barnes’ One Hit Away takes the reader on a traumatizing yet moving narrative that hits you in the gut from the first chapter on. It’s an emotional tale—a survival rollercoaster of habit and helplessness that exposes the harsh reality of the struggle for sobriety. A naked and honest look inside the perilous road of recovery and rehabilitation, it’s a must-read for anyone wishing to understand the power of addiction as well as the hope for redemption.”   Michael Kitchens, Creator, Stolen Stuff Hawaii
