“The best lack all conviction, while the worst Are full of passionate intensity…” -- William Butler Yates And what’s the use of wisdom, now, midst all the noise and fray? Is anyone even listening, with the asses all at bray? You may hone your wisdom, primp and tart and parse it up in palatable bits; by the time that’s done, you’re only one among the instant hits. We’re all awash in wisdom now, deluged on every side with wit and word, advice and ire, warnings dread and dire. Perhaps consult the ancients? (If one dares to risk regress!) They’ve endured for ages -- surely their wisdom is the best? But that takes work and study, patient concentration; we’re in an urgent hurry, no time for contemplation! As for me, I’m just a simple everyman. With grit and grace I’m muddling through, crafting my own wisdom, still evolving toward the true. |
