The story behind my two books
Not many books about China have been written by ordinary Chinese citizens. My goal is to present readers with a balanced and contemporary view of my experience living under Mao’s Communist rule for the first 40 years of my life. In the first volume, I provided a detailed account of how the ordinary Chinese lived on a daily basis. I also shared my working class family background and my childhood growing up in Shanghai, the unexpected opportunities the revolution brought, as well as the hardships, struggles and political movements millions of Chinese faced during that period.
In the second volume, I focused on the last three decades of my life after entering the U.S.A. as an international graduate student in September 1989. I shared my experience of how I embraced my new world, looked for work and opportunities and what my life was like as a struggling immigrant while painfully missing my country, my family and my only daughter whom I left behind in China.
After I reunited with my daughter, earned my degree, overcame many challenges and had to make some tough choices, I finally reaped the fruits of my labor and started to enjoy a simple and comfortable life with my husband in California. I look forward to my fellow writers’ comments. I can be reached at [email protected]
